Update: Trollstigen opens 27 April 2026

The County Road Administration in Møre & Romsdal confirms that the Trollstigen road will open already Monday 27 April 2026 at 12:00.

Trollstigen road opens Monday 27 April 2026 at 12:00

This is a very early opening of the road compared to what a so-called “normal season” in Trollstigen is. Normally the season typically runs from mid-May to October/November. The date varies every year, there are no guaranteed specific opening or winter closing dates, as this depends on weather and road conditions.

Visit Northwest and the local tourism industry look forward to welcoming guests again in 2026 to experience the entire stretch of the Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger-Trollstigen.

Short closures

There are no major rockfall protection measures planned, but some remaining work is likely to be carried out, which may cause short closures (towards the end of the season and/or as night work). If this occurs, it will be communicated well in advance, with minimal negative impact on traffic.

"After the safety work that has been carried out in 2025, Trollstigen is considered safe enough for traffic. We have clear routines for closing the road if there is heavy rainfall due to the risk of falling rocks, but apart from that, no further work or closures are planned. A larger project to secure the entire Trollstigen is planned for the future, but this depends on toll funding and is still a few years away. The road is considered safe, but travelers must always respect the forces of nature and, like any road in exposed natural surroundings, there will always be a potential for unforeseen incidents," says Torgeir Bye, Section manager for road operations at Møre og Romsdal county administration.

Construction work:
There will be some repair work taking place on the Trollstigen Plateau for a few weeks after the opening date. Traffic will be regulated with signage past the construction area. In week 19, damaged windows in the entrance area of the Trollstigen café will be replaced, which will result in slightly reduced access to the pedestrian bridge leading to the viewpoints.

In week 20, windows will be replaced on the café building at Gudbrandsjuvet, but this will not hinder visitors.
